Education & Outreach

From the most recent aspects of our archaeological record – those surviving pre-1900 cottages, churches and pubs to the impressive pā complexes and extensive coastal midden, they all add to our unique Aotearoa / New Zealand story.

Why should we care?

It’s just a pit...  It’s just broken bottles...  It’s just a pile of shells...

Because it is our heritage. Because it is not for us today to decide what will be important to our children and grandchildren. Protecting our heritage environment, much like protecting our natural environment takes passion, belief and knowledge, as well as legislation. AHB provides support for schools, tangata whenua, and any other interested parties to improve wider understanding of the importance of preserving our heritage as well as the legislative procedures involved.

SCHOOL EXCursiONS

Kids love a day out of the school grounds, and here in Hawke's Bay we are lucky enough to have some fantastic archaeological sites that can easily be visited.

From the imposing Ōtātara and Heipipi Pā, to surviving pre-1900 cottages, churches and pubs in Napier and surrounding towns, there is something for everyone.

Add to these the treasures of the MTG and the traditional knowledge of tangata whenua, and the possibilities to extend kids learning - bringing our past into their present - are limited only by our willingness to teach and share.

If you as student, teacher, parent / guardian, historian, custodian of knowledge in any form would like to discuss, arrange or offer your help please contact me.

Arch Week 2019.JPG

ARchaeology week 2019

Did you know that every year we now have  a week dedicated to archaeology? And since it's inception in 2017 we have had a small program of archaeology and heritage related presentations here in Napier. Others have occurred around the country.

In 2019 we will be coming up with another program of events. This may include more talks, some walks, or some hands-on events. Is there something that you'd like to see, learn about, have a go at? Contact me and share your idea.

By understanding better what you - our local community would like; we - your local Archaeology Week organizing assistants - can better tailor our offering to your interests.

Thanks again for your contribution to one of the best trips we have had.
